The non-existent defense “cut”

Greater Wingnuttia has been screeching in the past couple of days that the Obama administration has proposed a 10% “cut” in defense spending. As documented by Glenn Greenwald, they are (naturally) lying:

These facts should be familiar by now:  by itself, the U.S. spends almost as much on its military as every other nation in the world combined.  It spends almost 7 times as much as the next-largest defense spender (China).  We invade, occupy and bomb other countries far more than any other nation in the world (only one other country is even close).  These figures don’t even include the massive amounts we spend in aid to militarize other countries.  Even in light of all that, Barack Obama wants to increase America’s defense spending.  Yet Robert Kagan is shrilly warning that people will disrespect and laugh at him the U.S. for being “short of breath” unless we show everyone how tough and strong and powerful and Churchillian we are by spending even more.

Looks like wingnuts like Porter Good, “Emperor” Misha, Big Dog, Amy Proctor, Mike, and Jeff Burhans will just have to find another lie to flog. This one’s dead.

  1. In case you missed it, i had a follow up post stating that the figure was incorrect. Nice try, though, Meaty!

  2. Funny how all the people were ready to bash Obama for hating America when Teach posted about cutting the budget but when he posted about Obama increasing the budget they were strangely silent…

  3. In case you missed it, Porter, you were very happy to help spread yet another lie. Kindly point out where you apologized to your readers for being such a tool.
