Four times as much oil as offshore drilling

Or, maybe 1/10th as much….http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/instapundit/main/~3/357801134/022542.php

And that’s assuming that you can somehow guarantee 100% compliance with keeping everyone’s car in perfect tune and proper tire-inflation at all times.

And of course, pursuing MULTIPLE solutions is just a silly idea, isn’t it?

We can only pick one….EITHER drill, or maintain!

Or we could just get a little bit crazy and like, you know, increase domestic sources of oil, domestic refinery capacity, increase alternative energy production like nuclear, solar, wind, and tidal, encourage proper vehicle maintenance and reduced consumption, continue research into fusion, and…Naw…it’s just too crazy.

The only hope is that we elect Obama, stop the rise of the oceans, cool the planet, have Jews and Arabs living together in harmony, the unicorns will come back, and we can all dance through the mystical forests with the happy little elves, tra-la-la!

Hope and Change! And then invade Pakistan…

The article that Jeff Burhans (aka “Orion”) refers to links in turn to an ABC News article. That article compares the fuel savings that can be gained by proper tire inflation and engine maintenance to the current production from the Outer Continental Shelf.

This is, of course, not the comparison that Obama made:

“There are things that you can do individually though to save energy,” Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, said. “Making sure your tires are properly inflated, simple thing, but we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups. You could actually save just as much.”

The proper comparison is between the fuel savings from proper tire inflation and engine maintenance and the amount of fuel that new offshore drilling would produce:

So: is it true that we can save as much oil by inflating our tires and getting regular tuneups as “they’re talking about getting off drilling”? Yes. I assume that Obama is comparing the oil saved by inflating tires and getting tuneups to the amount of oil we could get by drilling offshore in currently restricted areas. I haven’t been able to find a transcript or a video of the context of his remarks (if anyone can find one, let me know), but it seems logical to assume that the “they” who are “talking about getting” oil from drilling are the McCain campaign, and that Obama is referring to the proposal McCain has been hammering at every opportunity.

ABC’s Jake Tapper has consulted the Director of CSIS, who estimates that inflating tires and getting tuneups could save around 800,000 barrels of oil a day. For some reason, he compares this to current output from offshore drilling, not to the projected gains from lifting restrictions on offshore drilling. Luckily, the government’s Energy Information Administration has estimates on the effects of lifting those restrictions: it would raise domestic oil production by 1.6% over the years 2012-2030, and by 3% in 2030. Doing the math using their figures, the highest level of additional oil that lifting offshore drilling would produce would be a little over 200,000 barrels per day (in 2025-2028.)

Last time I checked, 800,000 was greater than 200,000. Moreover, we could achieve those gains now, while lifting the limits on offshore drilling wouldn’t produce any new oil for a decade.

Last time I checked, 800,000 is four times as much as 200,000.

And of course, pursuing MULTIPLE solutions is just a silly idea, isn’t it?

We can only pick one… .EITHER drill, or maintain!

This, of course, is an argument that Obama has not made. It is an example of the hoary and dishonest tactic known as the “straw man”. Jeff Burhans (aka “Orion”) again demonstrates his utter inability to conduct an honest discussion.

Jeff Burhans is obviously ignorant of the fact that Obama’s energy plan does, in fact, include initiatives to develop alternative energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal energy; consider the safe expansion of the use of nuclear power; improve vehicle efficiency; and increase the production of oil from areas already under elase to the oil companies.

Like most wingnuts, Burhans is proud of his ignorance, and displays it at every opportunity.

Hope and Change! And then invade Pakistan…

Jeff Burhans is referring here to the oft-repeated wingnut lie that Obama has stated he would invade Pakistan. This is, of course, false.

Burhans delights in repeating proven lies, and does so at every opportunity.

Oh look, Orion is back. I can’t wait until he starts sighing and shaking his head when he’s backed into a corner.

His method of debate – setting up false choices and conveniently ignoring facts that contradict his elementary school-level premise – does a great job of reminding us how dishonest, or just plain stupid, wingnuts are.

Orion will probably underinflate his tires and drive erratically just to lower his own mileage & poke his finger in the eyes of liberals. Even if it means he pays more to Saudi Arabia & the oil companies. What a ‘patriot’!

Typical ‘conservative’: adamant in their refusal to pay more taxes, but A-OK with getting fleeced by large corporations & giving already profitable large corporations all sorts of corporate welfare. ‘Conservatives’ are good sheeple, just like big Dog & other low-IQ wingnuts!

chuckling Haven’t been backed into a corner here yet. I’m afraid you kids aren’t even close.

But it DOES amuse me to watch your one-trick repeated each time…It’s one of those morbid fascinations.

Ever hear the phrase “Never try to teach a pig to sing…It wastes your time and annoys the pig.” Well, I guess I just like annoying pigs some days.

So, let’s try again….First note…”DOE!!!”

Orion

Haven’t been backed into a corner here yet.

False. Jeff Burhans (aka “Orion”) gets backed into a corner every time he is confronted with the facts — as I did just above. That is why employs straw man arguments, and why he abandons the discussion entirely as he has now.

You go on believing that, Meaty. Whatever helps you to sleep at night.

When an adult gets tired of ‘debating’ with a four-year-old who keeps asking ‘But why?’ and moves on, the four-year-old has not won, nor has he backed the adult into a corner.

Parallel cases, little one. Now come on, just one note…’Doeeee’? Don’t make me do the whole ‘Mary Poppins’ thing…

Orion

I have not asked “but why?”. I have pointed out facts that so badly terrify Jeff Burhans (aka “Orion”) that he ignores them completely and spins the fantasy that he is the adult here.

He also runs away when facts are introduced into the discussion. He will do so again.
