Despite the assurances of warpimps like Widdle Jimmy Hoft, the “surge” has been disastrous for the Iraqi people and the soldiers of the US occupation force:
As of today, 37 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq. That is the same number of troops that died in May of 2003, when President Bush smiled in front of a “Mission Accomplished” banner and declared that major combat operations in Iraq were over.
That’s two more than the number of deaths in May of 2005, when Vice-President Cheney insisted that the insurgency was in its “last throes.”
That’s six more than the number in March of 2006, when the President insisted that “Iraqis will continue to take more responsibility for their own security, and fewer U.S. forces will be needed to complete the mission.”
And that’s the same number as the number of American deaths in November of 2007, when, according to the President, the Iraqi government was supposed to “take responsibility for security in all of Iraq’s provinces.”
But… but… but… the surge is a success!
Juan Cole:
A new professional poll carried out by a British firm in Iraq concludes that excess deaths from violence since March 19, 2003 through summer 2007 came to just over 1 million. Note that excess deaths from violence do not necessarily imply that they are directly war-related. Thus, murders of a criminal sort, tribal feuding, and so forth would be included. Since Bush interfered with the establishment of a strong new government after his invasion, he promoted the sort of insecurity that permitted high rates of violence, whether political, criminal or war-related. This poll tracks with the findings of the studies of Gilbert Burnham and Les Roberts, published in the Lancet and disputes lower numbers found by a recent WHO study (which, however, only ran through June 2006 and was limited solely to civilians—this British study goes to 2007 and seems to include everyone.)
The British findings are also consistent with estimates of between 1 million and 2 million widows in Iraq. These widows, many of them young, face extreme poverty without a breadwinner. As the Iraqi street has been captured by religious parties and militias, gender segregation and female seclusion have increased, which prevents single young women from going out to work in mixed-gender settings like stores and workshops. In short, Iraq is being Talibanized by Bush’s war.
Reuters points out that almost none of the widows are getting any welfare payments from the Iraqi government. It adds: “A report by aid groups found that 43 percent of Iraqis lived in “absolute poverty”. Four million people needed food assistance and only one in three children under five had access to safe drinking water.”
But… but… but… the surge is a success!
The Sunni insurgency, all but decimated in the imagination of the surge advocates, has demonstrated something of a surge of its own in recent weeks. Prominent collaborators with the U.S., like the so-called “Concerned Local Citizens” militias, have been targeted for death by insurgents and terrorists. “Of late, though, as you’ve been seeing, is certainly an increase in the number of suicide events that occur with individuals, mostly with a suicide vest wrapped around their waist,” Adm. Greg Smith, a spokesman for Multi-National Force-Iraq, said in a blogger conference call last week.
Iraq security statistics over the past 13 weeks, obtained exclusively by The Washington Independent, tell the tale. In Baghdad, improvised-explosive device (IED) detonations explosions in Baghdad have ticked up slightly to 131 in January from 129 in December — and the last week of January is not included in these latest figures. Countrywide, there was an increase in IED explosions to 2,291 in December from 1,394 in November, followed by a dip to 1,270 in the first three weeks of January. But the week ending on January 25 saw seven suicide explosions Iraq-wide, the most since the week ending Dec. 21, 2007.
But… but… but… the surge is a success!

But… but… but… the surge is a success!
Only by ignoring the facts can the wingnuts pretend that the surge has had any measure of success. But ignorance is what they do best.
UPDATE 02/02/08 1:04 PM EST: Observe that in Cao’s latest fit of warpimping, she still cannot address the simple question I asked in the comments: How can a strategy that has failed to achieve the majority of its stated objectives be considered a success?

Qwerty’s comment, as translated by Babelfish:
Note that the only responses Qwerty can formulate are to (a) toss off a few ad hominem attacks, and (b) pretend that by calling the war in Iraq something else, he has made an argument. Like most wingnuts, he is incapable of rational discussion.

my comment is awaiting moderation? Since when?
Since I made a complete fool out of you?
Well that happens every day, despite your desire to feel superior over everyone….one look at you makes me realize why you have this faceless blog…nobody wants to look at those brown teeth of yours.

I’m capable of addressing it, but since I didn’t read it and don’t care, I don’t have to.

Moderation has been turned on for the past couple of weeks. A malformed URL in a comment corrupted the blog database, so moderation permits me to keep such URLs out of the database until I can work out an automated fix.
Cao is lying. She is in fact incapable of addressing the substance of the post for the very reason she gave: she chooses to be ignorant.

Several fatal errors have been made…good effort though. You’ve finally polished your German skills enough to copy-and-paste into a free Internet-based translator.
1) Never trust Babelfish. “Klug” is the adjective form, not adverb.
2) German uses the period for comma in numbers and vice versa. 562.000 in German = 562,000 in English.
3) Never trust Babelfish. There was a clear “es” in the fourth sentence that was left untranslated in the corresponding English.
4) Never trust Babelfish. “Haenchen” happens to mean chicken. It’s a kind of meat. Not an ad-hominem there. If a translator can’t recognize a representation of an umlaut when it sees it, get another one. It pays to use a better translator. Likewise with “Maedchen.” However, Babelfish’s translation of “Loecher” was correct. Two points.
5) Too bad there was a non-German word in there that you couldn’t translate. You’re smart enough to figure that one out.
6) It’s called comparing the numbers. 562,000:4,000::war:skirmish.
7) There were two names applied to you, not three. It’s called satiric nicknaming, not ad-hominem.

False. The phrase Qwerty used was meant as an ad hominem attack. Lying about his own comments does not enhance Qwerty’s credibility.
It’s called pretending that calling the war in Iraq something else is an argument. It is not. It is intellectual cowardice.

No mind reading is involved. When Qwerty calls someone a “chicken”, it’s an ad hominem attack, and nothing else. And when he substitutes the word “skirmish” for the word “war”, he is not making an argument — he is avoiding making an argument, and that is intellectual cowardice.

The Air Surge is Working, TOO!
Is the “air surge” in Iraq a sign that the new military strategy is a failure? Not even close, says Bob Owens, who shows that the bombing campaigns are being coordinated with local Iraqis. What it has resulted in are “no U.S. casualties, no known civilian casualties, and the destruction of al Qaeda targets.”
——————-
Oh no, Thinking Meat Terry Bisson’s lookalike can’t bear to see the truth – so he has to invent more science fiction for his socialist dreams!

Cao
According to Col. Terry Ferrell, commander of the 2nd Brigade, 3rd ID, the intelligence to plan the Jan. 10 air strikes came from local Iraqi civilians “protecting their own, protecting their towns” from al Qaeda in Iraq. The purpose of the Jan. 10 strikes was to eliminate defensive positions, including weapons caches and IEDs (including HBIEDs—structural bombs, homes rigged with heavy explosives) targeted at approaching coalition forces.
Local Iraqi civilians collected enough intelligence over the last several months to pinpoint more than 40 targets.
According to Col .Steven Boylan, many of the bombs dropped during the strike targeted deep-buried IEDs. Boylan also noted that many of the strikes triggered “numerous secondary explosions confirming the hits.” He also confirmed that this was “very sparsely populated area,” and that Iraqi civilians were evacuated in advance of the strikes.

God forbid you should quote someone who’s actually over there, Bisson.

The Surge: Still Working

Another example of the tremendous success of the surge:
What Cao and her fellow warpimps ignore — what they must ignore — is that local reductions in violence in Baghdad and other cities were not the primary goals of the surge. Those were only tactics, and while there have been some reductions in violence in some parts of Iraq, the actual goals of the surge, as laid out by both the Bush administration and the Iraqi government under Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, remain largely unmet. This was documented by a recent report from the Government Accountability Office.
There’s more on this at the National Security Network. Reconciliation and political progress in Iraq has bogged down. The soldiers whose lives have been sacrificed in the surge deserve better than to have pundits and wingnut bloggers declare that the surge has been a success in blatant disregard of the facts.

GM
Be happy to refute your argument when you decide to make one meaty. Oh, and pretending that calling the skirmish in Iraq something else (a war)is an argument. It is not. It is intellectual cowardice don’tcha think?
By the way, Qwerty is exactly correct in the German meaty.
Oh, and picking at some supposed errors but ignoring factually correct statements is also cowardice meaty. Can’t understand why you don’t get it.
February 2, 2008 at 7:33 pm
meatbrain
See above. GM ignores that fact that I have in fact made an argument. Like others of his kind, he is incapable of actual discussion.
I’ll ask the question straight out, with the expectation that the warpimps will be unwilling to address it: How can a strategy that has failed to achieve the majority of its stated objectives be considered a success?
February 2, 2008 at 8:48 pm

I don’t understand how, but a previously approved comment of Qwerty’s has been deleted. It was:
”(should we break it to him, GM? That he’s using the proof-by-lack-of-evidence-to-the-contrary fallacy?)”
To which I replied:
What “lack of evidence” does Qwerty claim I am relying upon?
February 2, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Qwerty
Precisely. Since I “don’t” provide evidence to prove I’m “not” an “intellectual coward,” your fallacy is to conclude that I “am” an “intellectual coward.” Look it up.

Of course, I have made no such argument. Qwerty is unable to muster anything more than a straw man.

If the Iraq war is a $1 trillion ‘skirmish’, then bush is even more incompetent than I previously thought.
Cao lives in the same upside down world as your typical right-wing naif: war is peace, success is failure, debt is wealth, failure is success, etc. Right-wing dupes are almost completely incapable of using actual data to support their absurd conclusions.
I didn’t realize Cao was a girl, either. The world is just full of surprises: big dog is a nurse, Cao is a girl, Wild bill of passionate America is a tough stay-at-home dad with a criminal record, the ‘Gathering of Eagles’ guys are so fat and lazy that they don’t even march when they do their protest warrior routine, etc.
