In a recent comment on her blog, Kit Jarrell at Euphoric Reality admonished me that
In a debate, people defend their own beliefs and counter the other person’s beliefs with facts.
Does this requirement extend to Kit’s own co-blogger, Heidi? Apparently not…
1) Noting the recent arrest in Britain of a man who had threatened to kill a British soldier, Heidi states that
Oops. The Patriot Act is still in full force. It was extended to February 3 of this year by Congress, and is still up for renewal. It is not in any way “defunct”.
2) Heidi notes that Cindy Sheehan recently met with Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela. During the meeting, Sheehan is reported to have said to Chavez: “I am convinced with your support … and the support of people all over the world, the war in Iraq will end, our troops will come home, Bush will be impeached and he will be brought to justice.”
Heidi then states:
I’m no lawyer (thank g-d and knock on wood) but I’m pretty sure the Ditch Bitch has finally crossed the line from “dissent” to “treason”. You cannot tell me that consorting with a declared enemy of the United States, and urging – no inciting – him to overthrow the elected government of America is NOT treason!!!!!I am sick and tired of this overused and butt-ugly hag traipsing around the world and shoveling her anti-America shit all over the damn place!!! She’s disgusting, vile, disloyal, dishonorable, and sick in the fucking head. Throw her traitorous ass into prison and let her rot.
Well, Heidi is right in one respect: You can’t tell her anything. The fact, however, is that Hugo Chavez is not a “declared enemy of the United States” (whatever that is — the phrase itself has no legal meaning). And urging the impeachment of the President is not equivalent to advocating the “overthrow the elected government of America”. As I recall, President Clinton was impeached just a few years ago. Oddly, no one at the time claimed that the Republicans who did so were guilty of treason.
I’m all for basing arguments on facts. I hope that Heidi and Kit will start doing so, soon. First, of course, they will have to learn not to confuse their personal subjective biases for or against a particular individual with statements of objective fact.
